I called KOBO who used to service Literati, they gave me the new Literati support number. Rosa Frey  |  20 reviewers made a similar statement
Battery and Charger - For an eReader the battery is not the greatest but not horrible but it takes a long time to charge. SciFi lover  |  20 reviewers made a similar statement
I still havn't gotten through, and am thinking of getting another type of reader but I am afraid all the books I bought at Kobo will be lost ! Lak  |  11 reviewers made a similar statement

THIS IS AN EDIT!! June 30th, 2011WARNINGI finally upgraded my personal desktop to Windows 7 and my Literati does not work with it at all.I tried adding books by drag and drop, tried Calibre too. The first connection seemed to work but then after unmounting and disconnecting the USB, the Literati would not 'update' and just shut off. After turning back on, everything was slower in the boot and the book I had added didn't show up. I tried reconnecting and deleting the book, but now I can neither remove or add books. Delete doesn't work, etc... I decided to connect it to a Windows XP computer and it no longer recognizes the book reader. The books already on it are still readable though. I tried reseting, didn't help. I tried factory reset and it did not erase the books again. This is supposed to remove everything. I tried to factory reset again, but still no deleting or adding.I have tried different cables and another Windows 7 computer. I have tried to delete directly from the Literati and even that does not work anymore! After web research, I found many people saying it was incompatible with their Window 7 too, so common problem. It was a good eReader for $50 but now... I'll see if I can get it replaced. If I had known this issue, I would have never connected to a Windows 7 machine, I would have kept all books on the SD card. Now I'm so disappointed, 6 months is all I got out of it, and whatever books I want to read that are on it so... 2 stars because I really like it and read a lot of books on it at night during that time. So sad to see it go but not worth it to repurchase.Original review below.-------------------------------------------------------------------------------First off I will say that I am a Kindle 3 owner and lover, 5 stars. I decided to buy this eReader because I1. Wanted to be able to read at night2. Wanted something for my husband to read.3. Wanted to spend very little money.I read the reviews and took them in careful consideration. Most of the bad review are because this device is a bit difficult to use. For non-DRM books that are not ePub files, you will have to convert the files to ePub. This takes a program like Calibre or Stanza for Windows. Links below, both are FREE so this is not an advert.Pros -1. Great for night reading. Has an inverted screen option to reduce light even more. White letters/black background.2. Very pretty color screen; easy to read, with several font sizes: 9 book book shelf view of covers.3. Pages turns are very quick. Touch sensitive buttons on both sides of screen with D-pad left right changing pages also. At night silent page turns.4. Has a USB mini connection (which is more durable than the micro of the Kindle 2 and 3, rated for 10,000 connections rather than 5,000 by the USB standards, yet they pick micro! **shaking head**)5. Has wireless which connected right away for me so that you can use the Store.6. Like the order of the folders and books. Reading, New, All by Title, All by Author. (date added would've been nice)7. Supposedly works with some library systems. (Kindle doesn't, Nook does) I have not tried this yet.8. For a LCD screen the battery is pretty good, hours of reading. Probably will plug it in every two days.9. Comes with a leather case (very smelly; have to air it out if you are at all sensitive)10. Plug and play after updates. Drag and drop of ePub files, that you have or create. Calibre will sync to the device. Stanza will create a ePub of your conversion that you then drag and drop.11. Has a dictionary but you have to go to it and type in the word. (maybe that is a Con since the Kindle you just cursor over to the word and the dictionary comes up)Cons -1. Not intuitive. Definitely technical; must update (at least 2 times when first connected wirelessly? But is much nicer after the software update) and then Store and everything works right. Linux based so sure there will be hacks if you are really technical.2. All the wireless does is give you access to the Kobo store. (maybe there is a hack, haven't looked, not interested since I want a reader not a web-browser)3. Book page turns are fast and responsive but... when looking at your library and the Kobo store the page turns are painfully slow. The device is slow for uploading, and refreshing content. Even starting a book (loading) is a little bit slow.4. Only will read ePub and PDF files. PDF are fine but small. Unless it has large print, you won't want to read it. It has a zoom feature but then you have to pan around.5. Almost all my books seem to have a pretty large border so the screen width is not fully used.6. No landscape mode. ***edit actually it has landscape for PDF but not ePub.7. Battery and Charger - For an eReader the battery is not the greatest but not horrible but it takes a long time to charge. (My Kindle charges in 30 min- 60min) I had this plugged in 2 hours and it was not quite all the way charged from a 1/3 full. The USB is not the charger so more cables to carry.8. Doesn't come with a manual, just a quick start guide. (there is a help section, that is equivalent to a manual if you push "help" on one of the menu options.)9. Software, which is on the device, is not easy to sync with unless you want to buy from the store. (They make that easy)For what I wanted this eBook reader for, it works great. For someone who is modestly technical, you should be able to figure this out. Plug your Literati in; it becomes a drive letter in my computer called "Literati". You can put the books in the top level (which would become a mess) or in MyBooks folder. I created folders in the MyBook folder for each author. Calibre will do this also. I think Calibre may have created the "MyBooks" folder, since I don't remember it before trying the Calibre software. If you don't know how to create a folder in windows or linux, this might not be the basic eReader for you.I've had this for 2 days now and love it for what it is, a basic LCD eReader. Been playing with it and reading on it all day. I have periodically gone back and read my Kindle for comparison. The Kindle is easier on the eyes, no question. The Kindle has a bunch more bells and whistles and I love those too but that is not what I bought this for. I got this on clearance for $42.39 after tax, at Bath Bed and Beyond. They are now sold out. Here are links to help you convert and get your books to your Literati. **they have been edited out by Amazon.Stanza's easier to use but Calibre has more features. Both are free. You can google "Stanza for Windows" and the 1st or 2nd links come up. The first explains the program the the second is the download. I tried CNET but they only had the Mac version. It is an Apple product, so the Windows version is harder to find.[...][...]For Calibre (go to CNET downloads; they have it there)-[...]I cannot believe that this is a free program it has so many features! All the same, Stanza is easier to use. Faster too.I suggest you don't buy this unless someone, who will set up your books for you, preferably you, has Window's technical skills in manipulating files, cut, paste, open with..., create folder, etc... I'm happy with my purchase but can understand how others might not be. I docked it a star for not supporting more eBook formats. I think all eReaders should support .txt and possibly .doc files or .html. I just have so many doc files, txt files and html files that it would've save me time to just drag and drop. I did not have any trouble setting it up or getting books on it, so the star is not for difficulty. I almost feel bad to take the star but it is what it is**edit**February 24, 2011OK, after using this for around a month, I have further comments. Not sure if it is worth docking a star or not. For a $50 buy, probably not, but it is $90 right now so... 3 1/2. I let the 4 sit.The additional cons---- Will not go to page number. The only way to navigate further into the book is the table of contents or flip the pages. This is very annoying when trying to go from reading the Kindle during the day and switching to the Literati at night. Flipping through 100 pages when there is no navigable table of contents really stinks. (This is where I would drop a star) I went to see if they had an update but for this feature, no luck. Being able to navigate to a page number or percent finished (like with Kindle) is essential.-- The 4 way D-pad squeaks now when pushing in the down direction. At night this is annoying while you have someone sleeping next to you. I've been press the up direction and going around the choices. The additional pro--When you are finished reading a book, if you continue to push the next page, the Literati pops out of the book to the home screen, and deletes the book from your now reading list.I still feel strongly that this reader is NOT for the technically challenged. I still love it for reading at night and for under $43 it was a wonderful purchase, even $60 would've been worth it for me.
