This stand works as advertised and I find it really does a good job of holding the iPad. Not only do I use the stand over my bed to watch Netflix movies (with headphones while my wife is sleeping), I also use it to hold my iPad over a small table in my bedroom as a "monitor" stand and type on the iPad using a wireless keyboard.The stand itself is rather wide (~14"w x 12"h) but it is meant for holding books as well. Also the base is heavy so there is no fear of this stand tipping over. Depending on your aesthetic senses, the stand might not fit your overall decor - my wife refers to it as the eyeSore - but I love it for it's practicality. I looked a while for other iPad stands but none of the current offerings offer the ability to view in bed and/or on a desk: most stands are primariy meant for desk viewing.As far as holding the iPad, the stand uses four bungee-like bands fastened to Velcro bumpers which can be velcroed in either portrait or landscape mode. When on the stand, I keep my iPad in landscape mode mainly because of Netflix. But if I want to use portrait mode, I just turn the platform 90 degrees and I'm there.I use Apple's cover for my iPad but my wife's iPad is encased in a heavy Otterbox Defender. While the stand can hold different sized covers, I'm guessing the bungee bands would become stretched holding a heavier case (i.e. The Defender) verses a lighter case such as Apple's, especially if you adjust the platform such that you're viewing the iPad overhead (i.e. lying in bed watching movies). Because of this, We don't mount her iPad in the stand.The open design also allows easy access to all ports: headphone, charging, volume, orientation lock (soon to become a useless mute button). If you're just going to mount an iPad and no books, you don't need to install any of the book holding components.My only two gripes are the price ($150) and the inadjustability of the platform. What I mean is that if the platform becomes loose over time (i.e. constantly switching from portrait to landscape mode), there seems to be no way to tighten it because the platform is fastened with a proprietary pin, not a screw and nut. Hopefully this does not become an issue in the future but I won't know that for sure since I haven't had the stand for very long. I'm still giving this stand its due however as it addesses my needs for both a desk and bed reader, and does both quite competently well.
