I have now used this tablet for almost 3 months. I am not a journalist or evaluator of electronic devices (borrowed for short period). I am just a normal user who uses it daily for myself. I do not own any other tablet but have a colleague who uses an iPad, with which I can compare.CONCLUSIONAfter one month of use, I found myself loving it. After two moths, I was loving it even more. And after almost 3 months, I cannot live without. I recommend it highly to everyone.WHY NOT APPLE'S IPADI am an Apple fan. I have been a Mac user for last 20 years. I bought at least 4 iPods in the past. And I currently use iPhone. So naturally I liked iPad when my colleague showed me one. Then why I did not buy Apple's tablet (iPad)? That's because I am an iPhone user! More and more I learned about iPad, it became clear to me that it is a "big iPhone without phone". I already have most of the features of iPad in my iPhone. In other words, If I buy an iPad, I gain little while paying twice for the same things. But If I buy an android tablet, my selection of features and apps gets doubled, as I gain an access to Android Market in addition to Apple's App store. This was one of decisive reasons why I chose Sony Tablet over Apple's iPad.HOW I USE ITI use Sony Tablet both at home and at work, daily. At work, I use it for emailing, web browsing, scheduling, and note taking. At home, in addition to what I do at work, I use it as e-reader (Kindle), video/movie watching. I use it as a universal controller for everything in living room (TV, CABLE, BD/DVD Player, AV Receiver). I also sometimes listen to music (Music Unlimited) in bed.On weekends, I take it with me when going out. I use it to take pictures and videos. I use it as e-reader (Kindle) at cafeteria while listening to music (Music Unlimited). My wife uses it to watch movies in the car when we go out for a long drive.I charge it during night and I do not carry power cable at all during a day because I have plenty of juice left at end of the day.WHAT I LIKEA. Superb Design - Beautifully curved design with a wedge shaped body is a winner.I found that its physical design is not just gorgeous but significantly useful.(1) When holding it on your hand, it feels lighter than flat type because the center of gravity is closer to your holding hand. (This is true even when holding it horizontally with both hands if you hold the upper half of the device. And it feels secure because the wedge shape on upper side works as a slip-stopper.)(2) It is much safer and easier to carry it around room to room without fear of dropping it because the wedge shaped side works as a slip-stopper between your fingers that hold it.(3) The screen is easier to view with less glare, and its virtual keyboard is easier to type when placed on the desk because the wedge gives a comfortable elevation on upper side. You do not need a special carrier case to do that like all other flat shaped tablets.(4) This is the only tablet that you can gently put on the desk and comfortably pick it up without fear of dropping it because the wedge shape with hollowed sides gives you a convenient handle to hold it securely.Sony is the first company that realized that thiner is not necessarily better. Thiner and flatter the device, the more difficult to gently put it on a hard surface of desk because your fingers are not on the sides but underneath, and you have to pull your fingers from beneath at some point. And thiner and flatter the device, the more difficult it is to pick up. (Just imagine about picking up an unbending flat thin plastic plate from a desk!)(5) It is simply gorgeous to look at both when held in hand and placed on the desktop (you don't need ugly case to elevate the upper side).B. Light Weight - Use of special plastics make this tablet light and strong.(1) This tablet is lightest among all tablets in its size-class. It is essential for mobile device to be light. Lighter the better; therefore, it is the best in its class in this regard.(2) Sony achieves this lightness by using plastics. However, not all plastics are made equal. Sony fortified its device by using very sturdy special plastics (as opposed to cheep ones used in Samsung's). In other words, it is high quality plastic that is strong, very strong.C. Large Storage Capacity (External SD card and USB drive)(1) I bought one with 32GB. I also bought a 32GB external SD card. Together, my Sony Tablet has 64GB at all times. That's plenty for many videos and movies and other data. (Compare with Kindle Fire which has only 8GB)(2) In addition, with a USB connector ($17), I can also connect to my 500GB USB pocket drive if I need it. (iPad does not have USB connector.)D. High Quality Camera and Video Recorder and Crisp Video ReplayOne of the things that my friends envy about my Sony Tablet is quality of pictures and videos it can record. You take video in front of them and replay immediately in beautiful resolution. And watch their reaction :). It's fun.E. Universal Media ControllerI use it as universal media controller in my living room. I have now one device to control my TV,Cable, BD/DVD, and AV Receiver.F. EReader AppsI have all with Sony Tablet: Kindle app, Nook app, and Sony EReader app in this one device. I use Kindle app to read, well, Amazon books. I use Sony Reader app to read books from local libraries.G. Music UnlimitedMy music life has changed drastically after I became a Sony Music Unlimited subscriber. My music life was centered around Apple's iTune, in which case I was listening to same music over and over again because I had to buy every songs that I want to listen. And I can buy only so many. However, if you become a subscriber to the Music Unlimited, millions of songs become available to you. Suddenly my music world became drastically widened. I now listen to more music that I have never listened before. My favorite songs no longer become boring due to overly repeated listening. And I can listen to Music Unlimited at any place (not just Sony Tablet but any networked device such as PC, PS3, BD/DVD, etc).H. Wide ScreenUnlike iPad or iPad-wannabe tablets, Sony Tablet has a wider screen. That gives Sony Tablet at least two major advantages. First, it is much more suitable as a movie viewer. If you intend to use tablet for movie viewing, this is an important consideration. Second, it gives Sony Tablet a comfortable space for a virtual keyboard that includes numeric keypad, just like a normal keyboard. I really hate iPad virtual keyboard because I have to keep switching in order to type a number. Another good thing resulted from Sony not followling Apple.RECOMENDATIONS1. You do not need to buy a carrying case specifically made for a tablet if you already have a laptop case. I did not buy one because the wedge shaped Sony Tablet does not need one. I simply wrap my tablet with a soft cloth and put it in a case I had for my old laptop. In a cafeteria, I proudly pull out my Sony Tablet and place it naked on a table and look at a guy at next table, who is typing into his iPad submerged inside an ugly case that he has to use in order to give it an angle.2. You need some kind of screen wiper. I bought "Monitor Wipes" from Staples. I carry several wet sheets in a small plastic bag, which I refill once a week.3. You do not need to worry about power plug that some evaluators seem to complain. It works just fine.4. You do not have to buy Kindle or Nook devices to enjoy Amazon or B&N e-books. You can get a free Kindle app or Nook app as well as Sony EReader for Sony Tablet.5. You need headphones if you intend to use it for music or movies in public (such as cafeteria). I bought Sony Ultra Lightweight MDR-W08L ($7) from Amazon. It's very light and easy on your ears.6. Configure system so that you can have your virtual keyboard with numeric key pad. It is so much easy to type things if number keys are available without switching keyboard.

I've been wanting to get a tablet since last year and have been holding out since they announced ICS and Quad-Core processors. I was going to get the Prime for christmas, but it was unavailable, so I decided to wait and see what came out in the spring. I've stayed away from the Prime due to the higher price and GPS issues, so it came down to 3 tablets while making my decision (Transformer Pad, Acer Iconia a510 and the Toshiba Excite 10). All 3 tablets are very similar and met my criteria for a tablet (ICS, Tegra 3, 1280x800 display, HDMI-out, etc.). I had originally ordered the Iconia a510, but it was back-ordered. Then I saw the Excite was available and in stock early on Amazon last week, so I cancelled my order for the Acer and immediately orderd the Toshiba. What ultimately sold me on the Toshiba model was the Gorilla Glass, the Stock ICS experience and the Full SD card slot. My wife takes a lot of pictures and will love being able to just pop the SD card out of the camera and into the tablet.I received the device yesterday and it is very fast and slim. I used it for a good 3 hours straight last night with music playing in the background and experienced no lag at all and still had 70% battery remaining after the 3 hours. The Excite 10 is very well built and feels sturdy in the hands. Not too heavy, but just enough that it doesn't feel like you are going to break it. The WiFi signal was very strong and didn't have any issues there. The speakers sound pretty good considering how small they are. The setup took no time at all and with the Google Restore function, I had all of my phone apps (about 100) on my tablet within 20 minutes. So far I haven't come up with too many Cons for this device. If I had to list some they would be the following:1. There is a good amount of pre-installed junk on the device. Not that big of a deal since apps can be disabled in ICS.2. The Charger is proprietary. It would be nice to charge over microUSB, but with the size of tablet batteries, it would take forever to fully charge, so it is understandable why it doesn't.Overall, I am very pleased with this product and would recommend it.UPDATE 5/11/12:1. I wanted to point out that I ran AnTuTu Benchmarking tool and it listed the Excite 10 as a 1.3 GHZ Tegra 3 processor and got a better average score than every other device listed.2. Some of the pre-installed junk can be uninstalled, but some can only be disabled.3. I was able to plug the charger into my Laptop and Car USB ports and it was able to charge. It was charging slower than the wall plug, but a nice feature if the battery is running low.

This is the cover I've been looking for, and I couldn't be more happy with it. Feels like suede on the outside & is very well padded on the inside. It has two zippers, which is handy for opening the top only and sliding tablet into it, or you can unzip all the way around and lift the tablet out.

I did my research and decided this tablet would be best for me. I 'practiced' by first buying a Viewsonic gTablet. I rooted the gTablet and put on a different kernel (the stock kernel of the gTablet is SLOW...) With a different kernel, the gTablet was fairly quick and worked pretty well. However, there were some things that just didn't work on the gTablet, most notably, Skype. My husband's Motorola Xoom can Skype without problem, but I wanted to use my gTablet to make Skype video calls with my sons while they're deployed overseas. I can use my desktop computer for Skype, but when I'm not at my desk, I would like to have a convenient tablet for making the calls.I have an HTC Thunderbolt that I rooted and put a version of Skype on it for making such video calls. (Lest anyone think I'm stupid, my sons were not economically reachable by phone while in Afghanistan; thus, Skype.) I can use Skype on my phone, but sometimes, I'd like to sit and read on my tablet and be available via Skype without having to go into the other room to get on the computer or grab my phone. Two other reasons that I didn't really like the 10-inch gTablet was because it was just a bit heavy (1.6 pounds) and too large for kicking back on the sofa to read a book. Plus, as I travel a bunch, the gTablet was just a bit heavy and large for my purse. So I started looking at the 7" lighter-weight products. After my gTablet experience, I specifically looked for a 7-inch tablet that 1) runs Skype, 2) is not proprietary (like the Kindle fire), 3) has decent resolution, memory, and cameras, and 4) is lightweight. The 7-inch Thrive seemed to fit the bill. I ordered it, received it, configured it for my needs, and LOVE it!!NOTE: You may get lucky and get a tablet that will run Skype WITH VIDEO after you already purchased it. But many Android phone owners have already found that Skype WITH VIDEO will not run on every Android OS. It all depends on if a developer takes the time to write drivers for the camera hardware on a specific phone or tablet. However, if a phone or tablet is not worth a developer's time, you'll end up with a tablet that will never be able to use Skype with video. The Skype developers have proven themselves not too interested in ensuring their program works with video on every single phone or tablet. (It usually works with audio only.) That's why I specifically did my research to ensure Skype WITH VIDEO ran on this tablet.CONS:1) yes, it has a proprietary bulky cable. I'll live with it.2) no, it doesn't hold a charge as long as other 7-inch tablets on the market. No problem for me as it's not my primary computer workhorse. I use it early in the mornings before work and then in the evenings when I return.3) It's not as lightweight as the 7-inch Samsung Galaxy or 7-inch Kindle Fire; however, an ounce heavier (if that) was not enough to turn me away.4) The sound is not all that good (just like my Toshiba netbook). That's why I plug in my earbuds if I want to hear a Skype call or watch a movie while on the plane. Now for all the PROS:1) I can video Skype just great on it!2) I can download and install apps from Market Android without any problem (unlike the Kindle fire that has to go through Amazon.)3) I can load the 'Overdrive' app, download (free) library books from my local library (directly to my Thrive), and read them with absolute clarity. (I have a Sony eReader to use as comparison.)4) It's fairly fast and has a good amount of RAM. Plus, I can load a 32GB Micro SD card and the stock File Manager can see all of my files without any problem.5) I can mount the Thrive as a device on my Windows PC using a cable plugged into the micro USB port. (More info to follow on how to do this.)6) The movies that I load on my micro SD card play easily and look GREAT on the Thrive.7) I load the yahoo mail app and can do email without problem. I don't use the Thrive to do any heavy email writing. That's what my desktop PC is for.8) I can play 'Words with Friends' with my son on the other side of the world.9) I can read Word docs and view PowerPoint slides using the OfficeSuite Pro app.10) It has a GPS receiver so I can see my Google maps without problem and without being connected to a network.11) I can load Google voice and make phone calls.12) It has no problem with Adobe Flash player.13) It has two pretty decent cameras; front is 2MP, the back is 5MP.14) It has pretty decent tactile sensitivity.15) I didn't have to root it to get all this capability!I really like this tablet!I'm a computer professional. Between my husband and I, we have 2 desktop PCs, 2 laptops, 1 netbook, 1 Motorola Xoom tablet, 1 Viewsonic gTablet, an HTC Thunderbolt phone, and a Sony eReader. I've wired up my house with a LAN over the power lines for hard-to-reach areas. I have a wireless router with a firewall that I manage. And now I have a 7-inch Thrive that's convenient for taking on a plane. So when you consider this tablet, do not consider it as your primary computer. It's a convenient toy that does lots of convenient things without having to worry about a lot of proprietary software.MOUNTING your Thrive on your Windows PC requires that you install a driver on your PC that will recognize the Thrive. Do an Internet Search for "Toshiba Thrive USB ADB Driver" and you should probably find a (Samsung-tablets) link that shows you 2 types of drivers - USB ADB Driver for Win7/Vista x64 and USB ADB Driver for Windows XPx32. After you have installed the appropriate driver on your PC, and before you connect your Thrive to the PC, you will have to enable debugging on the Thrive. Do this by going into 'Settings', 'Applications', and ensure the "USB debugging" is checked. Once you connect the Thrive to the PC, it should be recognized. If not, try re-booting your thrive.
